Some may consider it “minor news” to the Lebron James story/saga that has the sports world up in arms, but I’ve got to applaud Oklahoma City here because they got it right. The face of their franchise, Kevin Durant just signed a 5 year, $86 million extension with no opt-out clause that will keep him in Oklahoma City for quite some time. This seems like a no brainer, but they locked up a 21 year old phenom who is an MVP caliber player. The best part is the no opt-out clause. If for whatever reason Oklahoma City collapses and Durant wants out, he has to play out his contract or hope for a trade. I hope Memphis feels dumb for paying Rudy Gay who got a 5 year, $81.6 million contract. Durant last season averaged 30 points and 6 rebounds while Gay averaged 19 points and 6 rebounds. Not only that, Durant helped his team get to the playoffs and is only 21. I won’t knock Rudy Gay for getting paid (get it while you can), but this is a good example why Oklahoma City will be a force in the Western Conference and why Memphis continues to delve deeper into mediocrity.
