Remember this name: Steven Stamkos. Why? Because he could very well be the next “Great One” aka Wayne Gretzky. Only eight players in NHL history have scored 50 goals in 50 games and Stamkos is on pace this year to do just that. Gretzky twice did it scoring 61 goals in 50 games, an all-time best, and also had 53 goals in 50 games. Gretzky has taken notice of what Stamkos has put up this year with 20 goals in 21 games. According to ESPN.com, Gretzky said “He’s got tremendous speed and a quick release.” The kid, at the age of just 20, did not rest on what he did last year, but only worked harder in the offseason to have an even better year. Stamkos has great skills, but what people don’t know is how hard he works to get better. While playing for the Sarnia Sting of the OHL League, Stamkos scored 100 goals in just two years. He was then selected first overall in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gretzky achieved the 50 in 50 plateau in only 39 games. Wow. The closer Stamkos gets to 50 in 50 could add more pressure to his game, but he has shown that all the hype only makes him play better.
The next “Great One”?
